Sisters of Charity Federation Issues Letter
Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph's and slavery
We, the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill founded in Altoona, Pennsylvania in 1870, trace our roots to the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph’s in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The following message was co-written by the Sisters of Charity Federation, a voluntary membership association of congregations of women religious that continue the values of St. Vincent de Paul, St. Louise de Marillac, and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.
We accept this moment as an opportunity to acknowledge and apologize for our own words and actions that may have perpetuated racial injustice. Our 2021 Provincial Chapter Statement calls us to “focus on the causes and effects of the racial divide” as we move into the future.
