The Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill will sponsor a Blood Drive with the American Red Cross on July 1, 2015 from 1:00-6:30 p.m. at the sisters’ motherhouse, Caritas Christi, 129 DePaul Center Road, Greensburg, PA.
According to the Red Cross, blood donation is an integral part of the health and wellbeing of the community. The need is constant, and there is no substitute for volunteer blood donations. Every 2 seconds, someone needs a blood transfusion. And, each donation can help save up to three lives. Eligible donors of Greensburg, Latrobe, and nearby communities are urged to give blood at this pre-holiday drive. Donors of all blood types are needed to help maintain a stable blood supply for the 4th of July holiday weekend and throughout the summer, especially those with types O negative, A negative, and B negative. Appointments can be made for a preferred time to donate at this drive by calling 1-800 RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
The July 1 Blood Drive is one of several special community service events that the Sisters of Charity have planned to celebrate the Year of Consecrated Life, which will be observed through February 2, 2016. The sisters are dedicating this Blood Drive to the late Sister Thomas Joseph Gaines, SC, known to most as Sister TJ. The Southwestern PA Chapter of the American Red Cross honored Sister TJ with the 2014 Lifetime Commitment Award at the sixth annual Red Cross Heroes Event. The Red Cross presents this coveted award to current or past volunteers, staff members, board members, or donors who have displayed remarkable dedication to the organization. Sister TJ became involved in disaster response ministry as a Red Cross volunteer. She was a chaplain with spiritual response teams who provided care to disaster victims after Hurricanes Charley and Katrina as well as the April 2011 tornadoes that ravaged 39 counties in Mississippi. Sister TJ’s commitment to serving those in need throughout her life of ministry exemplified the Red Cross mission of serving neighbors in need.
