Lent Reflection, Sister Barbara Ann Smelko, SC
During the recent Lenten Vespers at Caritas Christi, friends and guests joined the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill in prayer and reflection on a powerful theme: learning to see, hear, and love more deeply through Christ.
Inspired by the Gospel reading of the man born blind (John 9:1–41), Sister Barbara Ann Smelko, SC offered a moving reflection rooted in the words of Scripture:
“God does not see as humans see. Humans look on the outward appearance, but God looks on the heart.”
Through a simple invitation to close one’s eyes, Sister Barbara Ann encouraged all present to reflect on the experience of blindness—not only as a physical reality, but as a spiritual one. In that moment of darkness, guests were invited to become more aware of themselves, of others, and of the deep human need to reach beyond what is immediately known.
“Blindness is a call to REACH OUT to others, to explore what is beyond my very self.”
Drawing from the Gospel, the reflection highlighted the healing of the man born blind—not just as a miracle of restored sight, but as a journey of faith, courage, and witness. As the man comes to see, those around him struggle to understand and accept what has taken place.
This tension invites us to consider our own lives: Where are our blind spots? Where might we be resistant to seeing or hearing the truth? And where is God sending us?
Throughout the service, a simple sung prayer echoed these themes:
“Open my eyes, Lord, help me to see like you…
Open my ears, Lord, help me to hear your voice…
Open my heart, Lord, help me to love like you.”
Sister Barbara Ann reflected on how seeing, hearing, and loving are deeply intertwined in our relationship with God. The story of the blind man reminds us that transformation is not always easily received—but it is always an invitation.
“Seeing God, hearing God’s voice, embracing God’s love… is what we are sent to do.”
As we continue our Lenten journey, we are called to become more aware, more open, and more willing to be transformed. With open eyes, attentive ears, and loving hearts, we are sent forth each day to be the light of Christ in the world.
